Virginia Dems' 'Gun Control' Blitzkrieg Should
be a Warning to Gun Owners Nationwide

By Dan Zimmerman. Mar 23, 2026

Virginia has passed one of the most aggressive 'gun control' agendas of any state in recent memory. Senate Bill 749, now sitting on Governor Abigail Spanberger's desk, bans the future sale, purchase, importation, manufacture, and transfer of so-called "assault firearms," a catch-all term that sweeps up a huge number of popular semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns based on features like pistol grips, folding stocks, threaded barrels, and more. The law will also prohibits magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

This is a direct assault on the most popular defensive and sporting firearms in America.

Virginia wasn't always like this. For years, the commonwealth was a reliable pro-gun state with strong carry laws and minimal restrictions. But the legislature has been an almost 50/50 proposition of the last decade and Spanberger ran as a "moderate" against a weak candidate.

Once Democrats secured control of the legislature and the governor's mansion, the results were predictable. They immediately dropped all pretense about "moderate" government and rammed through an agenda of some of the most restrictive California-style limits on gun rights in the nation.
